From the remparts of La Citadelle (also known as Fort Adelaide), there are panoramic views of the entire city with its amphitheatre of mountains, the Champs de Mars Race course and the harbour. The fort was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV and built between 1834 and 1840 as a lookout post to check civil disorder within the city.

Opened as a private garden by the French governor of Mauritius nearly 300 years ago, the gardens served as a major horticultural research center for the French and British during the colonial period. Today it's home to dozens of varieties of palm trees, as well as medicinal plants, fish ponds, and an amazing collection of Queen Victoria water lilies.

La Maison Creole Eureka – Domaine Les Pailles

La Maison Creole EurekaThe winding road along Mount Ory will bring you to a unique maison créole (creole house) built on the slope of the mountains in 1830, with its very typical colonial structures emphasising the wide facades overlooking the gardens. An independent museum featuring antique furniture, old lithographs and diverse objects and paintings from private collections. This exquisite property is surrounded by the waterfalls of Moka River and the Port Louis / Moka mountain ranges.

Domaine Les Pailles, on the southern outskirts of the city, is a 3,000 acre nature park which includes the wild terrain of the mountain which forms the backdrop. The park, a tranquil scene, is itself a slice of Mauritian history with a replica of a sugar mill circa 1750 with a bullock turning the wheel, the original type rum distillery and an old style coffee grinding hut. A horse drawn carriage or, alternatively, a miniature railway will take you on a tour which includes a spice garden.
